This village saw 18 deaths in 2 months
Vijayawada: Kothamajeru in Challapalli mandal of Krishna District, looks every inch like any Indian village. But, beneath this glossy exterior is the tale of utter neglect.
In a span of just 2 months, 18 persons died in the village due to an inexplicable desease. Almost every third family in the village has lost someone or the other to affliction.
The plight of the village came to light only after a YSRCP delegation visited the village. A couple of TDP ministers visited the village later. The authorities have now swung into action as YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is scheduled to visit this place on Tuesday.
The village has its water supply from a near by pond . The pond is not a perennial one and has inflows from below the culverts. Between January and July, there was no water flow and the water body remained stagnant. Meanwhile, two carcasses of monkeys were recovered from the tank. The locals feel that this could lead to further poisoning the vehicles.
The government also failed to help these villagers. Though there is an alternative to the contaminated pond, the government is not exploring the possibility.
