GHMC, sources say, has identified three sites for decentralised garbage disposal.
Incidentally all the three suggested sites are on the ORR, it is learnt. Currently, the garbage disposal site at Jawahar Nagar takes the brunt of the twin cities' waste
clearance needs.

It is credibly learnt that a proposal on the three sites and their suitability will be sent to the State government for its formal approval. Meanwhile, sources say that proposals for waste disposal sites at Papireddyguda of Shadnagar and Khanapur at Manchal, Ranga Reddy district have been forwarded to the government, while a third site near Patancheru has been finalised by officials of the Revenue department. The site at Shadnagar is the largest of the three areas and the silver lining to the issue is that there will be no problems of acquisition since all three sites fall under land owned by the government.

GHMC and revenue officials have been mindful of Waste Management criteria which specify a safe distance for such sites from residential colonies, water bodies and the airport area, among others, apart from ensuring that a waste landfill site does not create additional local ground water contamination problems.

It may be worth pointing out the the Jawahar Nagar site has turned into a major source of pollution for neighbouring areas, with local residents demanding a shifting of the site. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had also given a direction to the state government to ensure that waste disposal sites follow the guidelines on the subject.
