Telangana Farmers Quit Agriculture Over Dry Spell, Drought

Hyderabad: Farmers in two districts of Telangana - Khammam and Bhadradri-Kothagudem - are forced to leave agriculture and search jobs in cities as recurring drought and dry spells conditions have worsened their lives.

The government is making efforts to change the mindsets of the farmers of the two districts.

A leading daily pointed out that the main negative factors that the farmers are having to deal with are rising temperature, fluctuating rainfall patterns, less rainfall adversely affecting the productivity of the crops and continuous dry spell conditions.

Kharif and Rabi crops time schedule have changed due to climate change. Kharif has been named as 'second summer' in the two districts. In Khammam, farmers could raise crops in 56,997 hectares instead of 2.30 lakh hectares.

Farmers say that the government should opt for new crop pattern keeping in view climate change and the following environmental changes.

In the month of June, there was only 49.9 mm rainfall against the usual 105 mm average rainfall. The month of July has also been disappointing.

One of the farmer was quoted saying by the daily that dry spell occurred three years back forcing him to quit farming and take up business.
