Hyderabad: After the vicinity of the historical monument Charminar was made a no-smoking zone, two people were fined Rs 200 for smoking near the popular tourist spot on Thursday.

City police fined the offenders Rs 200 each under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COPA).

The Charminar Police say that although there have been hoardings put up warning against smoking in public places, people continue ignoring it, while adding that the checks will be conducted regularly.

Boards and hoardings saying ‘No Smoking area,’ ‘Smoking is an offence here’ and ‘Smoking is injurious to health,’ on various establishments and barricades have been put up in the area, which attract hordes of tourists all year.

Hyderabad City police, also, recently conducted a two-day workshop for capacity building of police officials under ‘Mission Smoke Free Hyderabad’. The mission is supported by the Department of Health and Family, Welfare and the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, New Delhi.

According to the present anti-smoking law in India, smoking in public places was banned all over the country from October 2, 2008.
