Visit To Grandma House Turns Tragic As Four Drown While Playing Near Patancheru Quarry

Hyderabad: In separate incidents, seven children have drowned in water bodies across the state on Wednesday. Among these, four deaths have occurred in the city.

The four children who were cousins, aged between 10 and 17, drowned when they went to bathe and play in a government quarry at Rudraram near Patancheru on Wednesday evening.

Patancheru police said that the four were part of the group of six and have come to visit their grandmother at Rudraram. They went to the nearby quarry at 5.30 pm on Friday and it was filled with water due to rains.

The four kids - Govardhan, Vishnuvardhan, Anand and Nandini were playing in the water. After a while, two moved in the middle of the quarry which was about 8-10 feet deep and started drowning. To save them, the other two went, and they too drowned.

The other kids who were at the shore rushed to call the elders but by the time, they arrived, the four had already drowned.

DySP (Patancheru) Rameshwar Rao told a leading daily that the bodies were later fished out. The children did not know how to swim and there were no elders to supervise them. The location where the children died had about 8-10 feet water.

In another incident at Nandiwaddenman in Nagarkurnool district, three students who went for fishing in an irrigation tank drowned. The victims — Shailaja (12), Anil (12) and his sister Swati (9) had gone to Suryakunta tank for fishing.
