Hyderabad: The distribution of 'fish prasadam' by the Bathini family, which is believed to cure asthma, would take place from 9.30 am on June 8 to 9.30 am on June 9 this year at the Exhibition Grounds, Nampally here.

The 'fish prasadam' is being distributed for more than 170 years since 1845 by the Bathini family in Hyderabad.

Telangana Animal Husbandry Minister T Srinivas Yadav held a meeting with officials of various departments on the arrangements for distribution of the 'prasadam', an official release said.

More than three lakh people are expected to come for taking the 'prasadam' this year, it said.

About 450 kg of prasadam is being prepared and will be administered to about four lakh patients.

How does it work?

  • The fish prasadam will be given on the day of Mrigasira Karti, which marks the onset of monsoon according to Hindu calendar.
  • The Bathini brothers, Bathini Harinath Goud along with his family members Shivananda Goud and Gowrishankar Goud, will insert a herbal yellow paste into the mouth of a live fingerling.
  • The live fish will then be shoved into the throat of the patient.
  • There is an alternative for vegetarian patients. They would be given a medicine with jaggery. However, for vegetarians they need to use the medicine for longer time.

Rules For The Fish Prasadam

  • The fish prasadam has to be taken thrice over a period of 45 days on Arudra ( June 23), Punarvasu ( July 8) and Pushyami (July 23).
  • After the fish prasadam, another set if prasadam is given which are made into pills and have to be used on the three occassions.
  • The patients need to strictly adhere to a set diet prescribed by the family.
  • The patients need to strictly avoid 27 items and adhere to the diet to get the desired results.
  • The fish prasadam needs to be administered for four years continuously to get rid of asthama or other respiratory illness completely.

After administering the prasadam at the grounds, the Bathini family will provide it at their homes.
