Hyderabad: In a major announcement regarding the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections, the YSR Congress party (YSRCP), which had won three MLA and one MP seats in the previous elections in the State, said it would not contest from any constituency in the December 7 polls. While the party emerged as the main Opposition party in Andhra Pradesh in 2014, it had a considerable amount of vote share in Telangana, where it had fielded party candidates in 79 assembly seats and 13 Lok Sabha seats.

In a statement releases by the party's central office here today, the YSRCP announced that it had taken the decision in view of its focus on the 2019 general elections in Andhra Pradesh. "After taking into account the developments in the last four years, the party, with due diligence in this regard, decided not to contest the Telangana polls. At the same time, the party took a resolution to take measures to strengthen the organizational capacity of the party in the State, with an eye on the 2024 elections," it stated in the announcement.

Meanwhile, party Chief and Leader of Opposition in Andhra Pradesh Assembly YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is expected to explain the decision in his presser scheduled for tomorrow morning. On the advice of the doctors, the YSRCP Chief has been under rest after the surgery on his left shoulder, which was severely injured in the attack on him at the Visakhapatnam airport last month. He is expected to resume his mass outreach programme, Praja Sankalpa Yatra on November 12.
