Telangana, AP Drop in Ease of Doing Business Rankings

New Delhi: Relegating both the Telugu states from top two positions in Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) rankings, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh (MP) scaled up to replace them. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh (AP) dropped to sixth and ninth ranks from the recent first and two slots respectively, according to the latest data from Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). Jharkhand, Punjab and Gujarat are among top five after Chhattisgarh and MP.

On the other hand, India is in the process of improving its position from 130 to below 100. India has informed the World Bank about improved ease of doing business in the country. DIPP has further informed that the number of days to kickstart a business was reduced to 12 days from 29 days in 2015.

World Bank examines states’ performance in 340 reforms across 10 categories. The list of reforms includes single window, access to government information, land availability, construction permits, environment and pollution clearances, transparency in policies, etc.

Recently, Telangana had complained against AP for copying its reforms and business documents. DIPP in association with World Bank (WB) started ranking states in terms of ease of doing business parameters from 2015. AP stood at second position and Telangana at 13th position in 2015 rankings.

World Bank examines states’ performance in 340 reforms across 10 categories. The list of reforms includes single window, access to government information, land availability, construction permits, environment and pollution clearances, transparency in policies, etc.

States need to update on these parameters providing information about all the parameters to the World Bank via DIPP. With introduction of 250 reforms, Chhattisgarh stood first. A senior government official said that several state governments were taking these rankings on prestigious note, but the rankings are based on introducing reforms only.
