FIFA 2018 World Cup: Messi Messes Up Penalty In Drawn Match
Lionel Messi missing a penalty shot is among the near impossible situations in contemporary football. Yet this is exactly what happened in Argentina‘s match against Iceland today in the 64th minute of the match. The match ended in a draw with the scoreline reading 1-1. Argentina was awarded a penalty after Messi was brought down in the penalty area. The legendary Barcelona striker took the shot and guess what— hit straight at the diving Frederik Schram, the Iceland goalkeeper. The shot was definitely not the best of attempts by one of the greatest footballers of all time, and was quite typical of the way most of the match played out. Argentina was in control, in possession of the ball for most of the game and yet Iceland presented a rock-like defence. The Icelandic fortress seemed impossible to penetrate as three defenders encircled Messi, denying him room for his lightning quick movements. Messi had several unsuccessful cracks at the goal in a disappointing start to Argentina’s World Cup journey.
