Hyderabad: Students of English and Foreign Language University (EFLU) were left in lurch and most went hungry due to the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes and also due to the restriction on outside food permitted into the campus.

First came the ban on the higher denomination currency on November 8 due to which EFLU students could not purchase essentials or food from outside the campus. Several of them found it difficult to even change the money for lower denomination money. To add to their woes, the University authorities imposed restriction on delivery and distribution of food inside the campus. That is delivery of food through online apps to the campus has been banned. Therefore, students out of money cannot opt for online orders. EFLU students are opposing the University decision saying such a move was not acceptable and unreasonable.

Many students went without food due to a severe cash crunch. "We can't get food from the canteen and now we don't have money to get food from outside also," said a student.

The situation at several hostels in universities across the city is similar. The sudden ban on Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes is adding to the woes of the students who cannot purchase essentials with the currency they have.
