New Delhi: A JNU PhD scholar was booked for allegedly raping a 26-year-old woman on the pretext of marriage, police said on Wednesday.

The girl had come to Delhi in 2010 and since then they were in relationship. Singh despite repeated requests from the victim was not marrying her, hence she approached police

A senior police officer said that the woman had approached the police on Tuesday evening complaining that the accused, Ajay Singh, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, had raped her on the pretext of marriage. The accused was known to the victim since 2008.

“The girl had come to Delhi in 2010 and since then they were in relationship. Singh despite repeated requests from the victim was not marrying her, hence she approached police,” the officer added.

A case has been registered at south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj police station under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), police said.

Sources said that Ajay Singh is being questioned by police and he might be arrested after the statement of the woman is recorded under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
