Rahul Gandhi backs UP govt’s farm loan waiver, says it’s a step in the right direction
New Delhi: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday welcomed the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s Rs 36,359 cr farmer loan waiver
A partial relief for UP farmers, but a step in the right direction. @INCIndia has always supported loan waivers for farmers in distress, Office of Rahul Gandhi twitter account tweeted on Tuesday morning.
Taking a dig at the Central government and its discriminatory policies against states ruled by Congress and the other opposition parties, Gandhi scion said that the Central Govt must have a national response to the widespread distress & not discriminate amongst states.
Expressing happiness over the decision, Rahul further said ``I'm happy BJP has finally been forced to see reason. But let's not play politics with our farmers who are suffering across the country.’’
The Congress has been pressing for a loan waiver across the country on the lines of that done during UPA rule.
Delivering on BJP's poll promise to small and marginal farmers, the Yogi Adityanath government yesterday decided to waive their crop loans up to Rs 1 lakh, totalling a staggering Rs 36,359 crore.
The move will benefit over 2.15 crore farmers, besides 7 lakh others who had secured loans which turned into non- performing assets (NPAs).
On March 31 Rahul Gandhi met Tamil Nadu farmers who have been protesting at Jantar Mantar for drought relief funds.
During that meeting, Gandhi accused the government of ignoring farmers’ pleas.
