Quota for panchayat polls declared
Decks cleared for panchayat elections in the State as the State Government announced reservations for panchayat elections on Wednesday.
About 21,590 Panchayats will go for elections of which 3,958 panchayats have been reserved for Scheduled Castes, 1,218 panchayats for Scheduled Tribes, 6,986 for Backward Castes and 1,279 for STs in the scheduled area. About 8,149 have been declared as general panchayats.
Elections for panchayats were overdue by two years as it should have been held between July and August 2011 as they were delayed because of a legal tangle in announcing reservations.
