Hyderabad: Alleging Telangana government had failed to fill up the seats for degree courses through Degree Online Services (DOST), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) supporters protested at Commissionerate of Collegiate Education, Nampally on Tuesday.

The online admissions process initiated by the government at the last minute drew wrath from managements as the government didn’t conduct any awareness programme making students familiarize about the new system

In over 1,500 government and private colleges, 1,92,458 seats remained vacant after the recent online admission process was closed. Agitators rued that only 40 percent seats were filled after the closure of online registrations and seats allotments in phase I and phase II.

The online admissions process initiated by the government at the last minute drew wrath from managements as the government didn’t conduct any awareness programme making students familiarize about the new system.

“No programmes were held to create awareness on DOST. Many didn’t have internet connection, mobile phone or debit card to complete the admission process owing to which seats have remained vacant,” said Gauri Satish, state secretary, Degree Colleges Managements Association.

A total of 1.92 lakh seats are vacant. Several students did not report to the colleges where they were allotted seats, many failed to select enough web options and there were a few others who did not get seats in their chosen colleges on merit basis. Final decision on how to fill up the vacant seats will be taken once we evaluate the entire admission process

College managements and student demanded that the registration process should be conducted again for those students who made online errors including students coming from rural area who haven’t registered themselves.

Final decision on how to fill up the vacant seats will be taken once we evaluate the entire admission process,” said Vijay Kumar, in-charge commissioner of Commissionerate of Collegiate Education.
