Protests against thermal plant in EG turn voilent
Tension gripped Singapalli near Rangampeta in East Godavari district as protests over proposed thermal power plant sparked violence on Saturday.
Employees of KPR fertilizers and the villagers of Singapalli clashed each other pelting stones. The Police resorted to lathicharge to clear the agitating people.
Irked by police action, the mob damaged the window panes of six engineering college buses passing through the area. The incident took place in the afternoon, when the management made attempts to organise an awareness camp on the proposed power plant with police protection. When the mob was pelting stones, the police tried to stop them and a few police personnel sustained injuries in the melee.
To quell the irate people, the police fired three rounds in the air. About a dozen persons were taken into custody. Now the situation was under control, police said.
