Pregnant Woman Dies After Jumping Off Speeding Van To Escape Rape Attempt
Hyderabad: A pregnant woman died after she jumped from a speeding van to escape a rape bid by two men near Toopran on the city outskirts on Saturday night.
The incident took place on National Highway 44 at Ravelli village in Toopran mandal of Medak district. However, it came to light only on Sunday night. The victim was seven pregnant at the time of death, news reports said.
The victim, Regonda Kalavathi, 35, a resident of Pothurajupalli in Toopran mandal, boarded a van along with her seven-year-old daughter Sirisha at Kondapalli village in the district to return home after work. She went to Kondapalli to sell old clothes.
According to the police, the two unidentified men in the van attempted to sexually assault her. Despite Kalavathi's loud cries for help, the driver did not stop the van at her village. Kalavathi in a bid to escape from them, jumped off the running van. She sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot. The accused dropped her child Sirisha a few meters away. Sirisha with the help of locals alerted the police.
The police are yet to identify the culprits. A search to nab the culprits has been launched based on the CCTV footage on the highway.
