Power Consumption in Hyderabad Soars in Tandem with Mercury
This beats last year's record of 53.2 million units consumed in a single day. Interestingly, while last years 53.2 million units was on May 26 this year's record is in April itself! At the current rate of consumption the city will soon cross the 58 million unit mark, electricity department officials said.
There are 39 lakh electricity connections in the city of which 32.5 lakh are domestic connections and 5.5 lakh are commercial connections. Additionally, there are 40,000 medium and large scale industries. Though enough power is available to supply to meet this demand, the sudden surge in consumption is taking a toll on distribution wires, transformers and underground cables. There are reports of joints in underground cables melting and burning of transformers due to overload. Additionally, delay in replacing old transformers is resulting in power cuts in colonies located in the city outskirts.
