Obscene Dance In Peddapuram During Sankranthi Draws Ire Of Villagers

Peddapuram: Peddapuram, which was once notorious for what is euphemistically known as the world oldest profession is in the news again for all the wrong reasons. For the uninitiated, this town is one of the oldest hotspots of the devadasi system, and by extension a major point of origin of HIV in the state.

The devadasi system may have faded out, but the town continues to thrive on prurience. In a latest case, the Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Nimmakayala Chinnarajappa's constituency — Peddapuram in East Godavari district
made it to the headlines following an obscene dance event whose recording dance
went viral. Scantily clad women danced to the tunes of lewd songs in full public glare. A video clip of has become a social media rage.

Ironically enough, the dance event took place five kilometres away from Gorinta police station. The residents vented their ire at such programmes being organised in the name of Sankranti festivities.

Although such events are quite common in the Godavari districts during festivals, the police turn a blind eye as they are reportedly organised by ruling party members.
