Hyderabad: As the heavy rainfall over the weekend left a trail of destruction and claimed 16 lives in various rain-related incidents, the Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy requested the Central  government to declare the floods in the Telugu state as a national calamity.

Revanth Reddy held a review meeting with the concerned officials to assess the damage to life and property due to the incessant rainfall in the state. The state government is preparing a comprehensive report on the flood-related damage which will be submitted to the Centre.

As per the initial estimates, the state has suffered nearly Rs. 5,000 crore damage. The Congress government has urged the Centre to release Rs. 2,000 crore funds immediately. According to a press release, the state government has announced a compensation of Rs five lakh each to the kin of those who lost their lives in rain-related incidents.

In the wake of a red alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department, Hyderabad, (IMD-H), the government had earlier issued an order declaring that all educational institutions will remain closed on Monday, September 2.

In view of continuous rain in several parts of the state, the chief minister directed the District Collectors to decide on closure of schools after assessing the local flood situation and weather conditions. They have also been advised to set up call centres in the flood-affected districts to provide relief to the citizens.
