GHMC Rolls Out ATSC For Better Traffic Management at Junctions in Hyderabad

To clear traffic issues in the city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has installed new Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) systems, which modify the colours of traffic signals depending on real-time traffic data. The state-of-the-art adaptive control algorithm known as Composite Signal Control Strategy (CoSiCoSt), developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), adjusts the cycle time, green splits, and offsets to support coordinating with nearby intersections to manage area-wise traffic in real-time.

According to authorities, this implies that, unlike regular traffic signals, the new ATSC systems would automatically and continually modify the green times depending on the changing arrival patterns of cars at an intersection, with the aim of optimising both delay and the number of stops.

"The system is able to constantly monitor each junction movement, approaching vehicles, and creates new timing sequences to match them using camera-based detectors. In order to assure signal synchronisation and reduce system delays, a central system monitors the data from each junction and further optimises the system at the network level, according to the authorities," officials said.

Currently, Hyderabad is covered by 213 existing HTRIMS signals, 122 ATSC signals, and 94 pelican signals as part of the ATSC and Pelican Signal System (PSS) programmes. A majority of the project's scope, which called for constructing 57 corridors with 57 ATSC signals and 157 existing HTRIMS signals, has been finished and is expected to contribute to the success of the new system.
