Hyderabad: Reigniting the debate over name change, the Telangana BJP chief Kishan Reddy promised the voters that the saffron party will change the name of Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar after coming to power in Telangana.

Giving examples of the name changing of metro cities in the past, the BJP leader told ANI that ‘why should Hyderabad not be renamed?’.

“Madras was renamed to Chennai, Calcutta was renamed to Kolkata, Bombay was renamed to Mumbai and we will rename Hyderabad,” Reddy said on Monday.

During their previous visit to the Telangana capital, chief ministers of BJP-ruled states Yogi Adityanath and Himanta Biswa Sarma have asserted that if voted to power their party will change the name of Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar.

While campaigning for BJP candidate from Goshamahal constituency, Yogi had said ‘we have come to create Bhagyanagar’ as the BRS government is not allowing us to celebrate September 17 as Telangana Liberation Day.

Meanwhile, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi strongly reacted to Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi’s remark and said the BJP is indulging in ‘divisive politics’. He added that ‘Hyderabad is our identity’ and the saffron party cannot change it.
