Chevella Bus Tragedy Explained: What Led to the Deadly Telangana RTC Accident

In a horrific road accident early Monday morning, at least 19 people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries when a truck carrying gravel collided head-on with a Telangana State RTC bus near Mirjaguda village, close to Chevella in Rangareddy district.
According to Chevella ACP B. Kishan, the RTC bus had started from Tandur and was heading towards Chevella when tragedy struck. “Around 16 people, including the truck driver and several bus passengers, have been confirmed dead,” he said. The collision was so severe that the truck’s gravel load overturned and fell onto the bus, crushing passengers seated inside.
Rajendranagar DCP Yogesh Goutam stated that preliminary investigations suggest the truck was in the wrong lane at the time of the accident. “We are verifying whether the driver was trying to overtake another vehicle or was driving on the wrong side,” he said.
At the time of the crash, there were around 40 passengers onboard the RTC bus. Following the impact, rescue teams rushed to the scene, pulling out bodies and helping the injured. Traffic movement on the Bijapur Highway was diverted from both directions to facilitate relief operations.
Government Response
Reacting swiftly to the tragedy, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep grief and directed top officials to take immediate action. The Telangana CMO posted on X that the CM had instructed the Chief Secretary and DGP to oversee rescue operations and ensure that all injured passengers are shifted to Hyderabad for better medical treatment. He also asked available ministers to reach the accident site and monitor the situation closely.
IT and Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu also expressed shock over the accident. He immediately alerted the Rangareddy District Collector, police, and Medical & Health Department officials to expedite relief measures. The Minister held a teleconference with senior officials to review the rescue operations and instructed authorities to personally supervise relief efforts and ensure the best medical care for those injured.
Sridhar Babu also directed officials to keep families of victims and the injured informed and to assure them that the government stands firmly by their side during this tragedy.
Meanwhile, Chevella Police confirmed that the collision occurred near Khanapur Gate under the Chevella Police Station limits. “Several passengers are injured. We have reached the spot, and more details will be shared once the rescue operations are complete,” police officials said.
