Tokyo Olympics 2020: Lovlina Borgohain Secures Bronze Medal

 - Sakshi Post

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain lost 0-5 to Turkey's top-seeded Busenaz Surmeneli in the 69kg semifinals, settling for bronze at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday (August 4).

Having secured a medal for the country by defeating Chinese Taipei boxer Chen Nien-Chin in the quarterfinal on Friday, India's 23-year-old boxer was outboxed by Turkey's pugilist.

Lovlina got off to a good start in the first round, but the Turkish player controlled the second and third rounds with strong strikes. The second round was the same as the first. The forceful strikes that frightened the Indian seemed to leave Lovlina speechless. The script didn't change in the last round, as Surmeneli demonstrated her better abilities to win the bout and earn a spot in the gold medal match.

Lovlina became the third boxer from the country to win an Olympic medal in boxing, following Vijender Singh (2008) and Mary Kom (2012).

After Mirabai Chanu's weightlifting silver and PV Sindhu's badminton bronze, this is India's third medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
