The importance of Gandhi Jayanti:

Gandhi Jayanti is an annual celebration on October 2 that honours Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of India's nonviolent freedom movement. Gandhi, who was born in 1869, is credited with inspiring movements for civil rights and freedom around the world in addition to the people of India through his nonviolent resistance strategy known as satyagraha.

Gandhi Jayanti was declared a national holiday in 1948, the year after Gandhi's death, by the Indian government as a way to honour his memory. In remembrance of his lessons in truth and nonviolence, people commemorate the day with prayers, tributes, and marches for peace. Gandhi's message of peace and unification became universal when the United Nations recognized his efforts in 2007 by designating October 2 as the International Day of Nonviolence.
