COVID-19: India Moves To 7th From 9th Place Among 10 Worst-hit Nations

NEW DELHI: India now climbed to 7th from ninth position in the list of 10 countries worst-hit by the coronavirus pandemic on Sunday. With more than 1.88 lakh cases, India surpassed France which has recorded marginally lower 1,88,752. The US has more than 18 lakh cases of coronavirus and it is the nation with the most number of cases. It is followed by Brazil with over five lakh cases, and Russia with over four lakh cases.

On Sunday, India saw its highest-ever jump in coronavirus infections with 8,380 cases being reported in the 24 hours. A total of 1,88,883 coronavirus cases have been recorded till Sunday night. The number of deaths are also steadily increasing. 224 people have died due to coronavirus infection in the states on Sunday, the second-highest single-day number so far after 270 deaths on Friday.

The number of deaths increased from 2,000 to 5,404 within just 12 days. The mortality rate is at 2.9% and it is less when compared to other worst-hit countries. Nearly 48,000 new cases have been detected in the past week alone. Five states Delhi (1,295 cases), Tamil Nadu (1,149), Uttar Pradesh (378), West Bengal(371), Karnataka(299), Telangana(199) reported their highest spike in infections.

But the country takes solace from the fact that the number of people recovered from the infection has crossed 90,000. Mumbai reported a total of 1,244 cases on Sunday and the city has recorded the second-highest daily spike in deaths at 52. Maharastra has 67,655 coronavirus cases and 2,286 deaths so far.
