COVID-19: Nearly 2 Lakh Coronavirus Cases, Fatality Rate Declining In India

NEW DELHI: India’s COVID-19  recovery rate has been improving and a large proportion of coronavirus patients are getting cured. The recovery rate stands at 48.19 percent now, whereas the the fatality rate has declined steadily to 2.83% from 3.3% around a month ago. With more than 1.90 lakh cases, India climbed to the 7th spot from the 9th on 10 countries worst-hit by COVID-19.

The number of coronavirus cases in India has crossed 1.9 lakh mark. India reports 1,92,630 coronavirus cases and the death toll stands at 5,600 on Monday. The number of new cases dipped slightly on Monday to 7,573 while the fatality rate remained above 200 for the fourth straight day. The number of active cases in the country stood at 93,322 while 91,818 people have recovered so far, of whom 4,835 cured in the last 24 hours.

The Health Ministry said, "The recovery rate in the country is progressively increasing and has reached 48.19% amongst COVID-19 patients. On May 18th, it was 38.29%, on May 3, it was 26.59% and on April 15th, it was 11.42%".

The Ministry also said that, "A steady decline can be seen in the case fatality rate in the country. The relatively low death rate is attributed to the continued focus on surveillance, timely case identification and clinical management of the cases."

The ministry said that the global case fatality rate was 6.19%. The fatalatily rate was highest in France at 19.35% and it is followed by Belgium (16.25%), Italy (14.33%) and the UK (14.07%).

The testing capacity has been increased in the country. A total of 676 laboratories, including 472 government and 204 private ones are conducting the tests. More than 38 lakh samples have been tested so far.
