Beware of Cakes: Cancer-Causing Ingredients Found in Popular Varieties
Cancer Risk in 12 Types of Cakes
Red Velvet and Black Forest Cakes at Higher Risk
Cakes are an irresistible treat for most people, especially during celebrations. However, there is a darker side to this indulgence. The State Food Safety and Quality Department, Bengaluru has issued a warning that several ingredients used in cake preparation may contain carcinogenic elements. This news follows a similar warning from the department regarding cancer-causing substances in ingredients used in foods like gobi manchurian, kebabs, and pani puri. Now, cakes are under the scanner.
Cancer Risk in 12 Types of Cakes
Upon testing cakes from several bakeries in Bengaluru, the department found that 12 varieties of cakes contained cancer-causing agents. The use of artificial colors in these cakes is deemed hazardous. The department has urged bakeries to follow food safety and quality standards in their cake preparation, noting that these artificial colors not only cause cancer but may also lead to physical and mental health problems.
Red Velvet and Black Forest Cakes at Higher Risk
This revelation has sparked concern among cake lovers, as many enjoy cakes occasionally. Popular varieties like red velvet and black forest cakes are often made with visually appealing artificial colors. These colors, however, pose significant health risks. Despite repeated warnings from food safety authorities to avoid such colors and adhere to health guidelines, many bakery owners continue to ignore the regulations.
Minister Urges Caution
Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao emphasized the importance of food safety: "Every month, we send food samples for testing and conduct inspections at hotels and bakeries. Food must be of high quality, and if standards are not met, strict action will be taken. People should also be cautious about what they consume."
Dangerous Colors and Their Health Risks
Here are some of the harmful artificial colors identified in cakes and their associated health risks:
Allura Red: May cause allergies, asthma, digestive issues, and headaches.
Sunset Yellow FCF: Linked to allergies, hyperactivity, chromosomal damage, thyroid issues, and mental stress.
Ponso 4R: Can lead to behavioral changes in children, allergies, and asthma.
Tartrazine: Known to cause skin rashes, respiratory problems, migraines, stress, depression, vision problems, insomnia, and gastric issues.
Carmoisine: Can result in skin swelling, breathing difficulties, and hypersensitivity.
Conclusion
With these findings, it is crucial for consumers to be vigilant about the cakes they consume and for bakeries to comply with safety regulations. While cakes are a staple of celebrations, health should always be a priority.
