Squid Game Season 2 Receives Criticism After Its Cast Announcement
Squid Game's cast has recently been revealed on Netflix, but the announcement has drawn criticism from viewers for its lack of diversity.
Whether or not they had prior experience in Korea, the Korean cast immediately rose to popularity, during the first season. The show presented fans to new and rising stars from various walks of life, even though many K-Drama fans were already familiar with many of the actors.
When Netflix released the first teaser for the upcoming second series, internet users couldn't contain their excitement. It began with some classic opening moments from the first series, which gained global recognition.
Naturally, when the video was released, viewers couldn't contain their excitement as it was revealed in the trailer that several popular show characters, including Lee Jung Jae, Lee Byung Hun, Wi Ha Joon, and of course Gong Yoo, would return to the series.
Along with the cast that viewers of the series are accustomed to seeing, some shocking brand-new additions from well-known Korean actors were also made. Im Siwan, Kang Ha Neul, Yang Dong Geun, and The Glory actor Park Sung Hoon were all a part of it.
While many fans couldn't contain their enthusiasm when the trailer appeared on various platforms, there were multiple reactions to the announcement's diversity.
No female stars, regardless of their experience, were announced, which astonished many. Many believed that the first and most significant announcement should involve female actors, even though there may be more to come.
Some even brought up the "controversial" pasts of the lead actor and two other male actors, which made them hesitant to watch the upcoming season.
Korean viewers noticed an obvious lack of diversity in the early teasers, not just in terms of gender but also in terms of age and industry experience. Anupam Tripathi, who played Ali Abdul in the first series, was one of the rising stars.
It is disheartening that the first major announcement that was supposed to include the "main cast" didn't feature any diversity, even if more cast will undoubtedly be revealed, or so many people hope.
