Pakistan: Assassination Bid on Ex-PM Imran Khan, Shooter Held, India’s First Reaction

Gujranwala: Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan is reportedly injured after an unidentified assailant opened fire on a counter-mounted truck carrying the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman, Geo TV reported. As per local media sources, multiple shots were fired near the convoy of Khan. 

The PTI Chairman Imran Khan was leading a protest march near Allah Wala chowk in Islamabad to demand snap elections. As soon as shorts were fired, the security personnel provided cover to the opposition leader from attack. 

Sources said Imran Khan has received a bullet injury in his right leg. It is also said another PTI leader Faisal Javed was also wounded in the firing.  

Local media reports said Imran Khan is undergoing treatment at a hospital and is out of danger. One of the gunmen, who were reported to have fired six bullets at Imran Khan, has been arrested by the police while the other shooter was shot dead by the security forces. The arrested shooter told officials that he had come to assassinate the former Pakistan Prime Minister because he was “misleading people.”

Meanwhile, the PTI party has tweeted a video in which Imran Khan can be seen smiling and waving at the crowd soon after the attack. 

Responding to the attack on Imran Khan, India said it is ‘closely keeping an eye’ on the development in neighbouring Pakistan.

“It's a development that just took place. We're closely keeping an eye on and we'll continue to monitor ongoing developments,” Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.
