NEW DELHI: Reports of Indian intelligence agencies kept media houses abuzz after India’s most wanted fugitive Dawood Ibrahim and his wife were said to have tested positive for coronavirus. The reports claim that the couple is admitted to the Army Hospital In Karachi for treatment.

But giving a new twist to it, Dawood’s brother Anees Ibrahim, who handles D-company’s underworld operations and finance, rubbished the reports from an undisclosed location. Speaking to Indian news agency IANS over phone, Anees admitted that COVID-19 is a dreaded epidemic but dismissed the reports that his brother Dawood was infected with it. He said that his brother and the entire family were not affected by the dreaded virus and that they are at their home and not in any hospital.

Anees rarely speaks to the Indian media and in one such conversation to the Indian news agency, the mafia don acknowledged that he is running business in the UAE and Pakistan.

Intelligence reports had earlier said that Dawood and his wife have tested positive for coronavirus. The reports also revealed that the dreaded underworld don’s personal staff and guards have been put under quarantine.

Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar, who is backed by Pakistan’s Inter-services Intelligence (ISI), is widely believed to have made Karachi his second home after fleeing India. He is accused in several cases of terrorism, cross-border crimes including the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. Pakistan continues to deny that Dawood and his family are residing in Pakistan.

D-company’s sharp shooter and in-charge of extortion and betting syndicate, Chhota Shakeel, also lives in Karachi.

Speaking about both Dawood and Shakeel, this is what Anees had to say: “Bhai (Dawood) is fine and Shakeel is also fine. No one has tested positive for coronavirus. No one from our family is admitted in hospital,” said Anees, who chose to be silent when asked about his current location.

Hiding in Pakistan since 1994, Dawood’s family made its base in a highly-guarded locality of Karachi. Dawood’s daughter Mahrukh is married to the son of former Pakistan star cricketer Javed Miandad.
