Oceans cover over 70 percent of the globe and contain 97% of Earth's water. Every year, World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8th to create awareness about the Oceans. The main objective of World Oceans Day, according to the UN, is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean. World Oceans Day was first suggested in 1992 during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and the international day was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008. 

The United Nations selected the themes for World Oceans Day in the following years.

2009: "Our Oceans, Our Responsibilities".
2010: "Our Oceans: Opportunities and Challenges"
2011: "Our Oceans: greening our future"
2012: “Knowing our Oceans, Safeguarding their benefits.”
2013: "Oceans & People"
2014: "Ocean Sustainability: Together let's ensure oceans can sustain us into the future"
2015: "Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet"
2016: "Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet"
2017: "Our Oceans, Our Future"
2018: "Clean our Ocean!"
2019: "Gender and Oceans"
2020: "Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean"

2022: "Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean"

Here are some interesting facts about Oceans:

Till now, only 5% of the ocean is explored. The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimates that more than 80 percent of the ocean has never been mapped.

On average, 2,000 marine species are discovered each year.

Scientists say that majority of the volcanic eruptions are underwater. Over 70 percent of volcanic eruptions occur in the ocean.

According to the reports, 70 percent of the earth's oxygen is coming from the oceans.

Oceans contain more ancient artifacts than museums.

Oceans are a bond between continents, their people, culture, and life. So, it is important to save our oceans from damage.

According to the report, 17.6 billion pounds of plastic leak into the marine environment from land-based sources every year. So it is very important to use plastic-free alternatives.

Carbon dioxide is making our oceans more acidic. So, reduce carbon footprint.
