BTS’ Jimin Joins Suga And Jungkook With His First Solo Radio Hit
Just two weeks after his new song made its debut on a few Billboard charts, Jimin sends his most recent release to yet another rank. By making his debut on this specific list, he joins a very small group of some of the most prominent South Korean solo musicians in the U.S. who have achieved enough popularity to be recognised by many people on the radio.
This week, Jimin's track "Angel Pt. 1" debuts on the Pop Airplay chart, which lists the songs with the highest radio airplay in the United States. The song opens at No. 38 and features rappers Kodak Black and NLE Choppa as well as singers Muni Long and Jake. That's fairly low on the 40-spot tally, but simply by appearing at all, Jimin has shown his immense popularity.
Only four solo male South Korean artists—many of whom are members of BTS —have so far achieved popularity on the Pop Airplay chart. The first musician from the Asian nation to make it to the top 100 was a solo male. With his song "Gangnam Style," released more than ten years ago, Psy broke down barriers and eventually reached the No. 10 position. Before another K-pop act made it to the top tier, it would be many years, and it is still a challenging goal that few have accomplished.
Only South Korean bands and vocal groups appeared on the Pop Airplay chart for a long time; it took Suga nine years to join Psy there. It was a historic moment for the BTS singer, songwriter, and producer to collaborate with fellow pop artist Max on the song "Blueberry Eyes," which only barely reached No. 39.
The only other South Korean solo male performer to appear on the Pop Airplay chart is fellow BTS member Jungkook, who is also impressively one of the few K-pop producers to make it to the list more than once. With "Left and Right," which peaked at No. 11 in 2022, he and pop star Charlie Puth came close to reaching the top 10. Then, shortly before the year was up, Jungkook made a solo comeback with "Dreamers."
"Angel Pt. 1" was an instant sales success that sent Jimin and his co-artists to the top of many Billboard charts, particularly those for the rap and hip-hop genres. Now that the Fast X soundtrack single is being promoted to radio, it is evident that DJs are happy to play the song because, although only recently released, it is already present on the competitive pop airwaves.
