Visakhapatnam International Airport Set for a Fresh and Modern Look
Visakhapatnam: Exciting transformations are on the way for Vizag's International Airport, promising a new and improved experience for travelers. The airport premises will soon undergo a significant makeover, becoming more elegant and beautiful. To enhance the safety and convenience of passengers, several improvements have been approved, including the expansion of roads.
Currently, the airport's access road is shared by vehicles picking up and dropping off passengers. However, a new plan is set to streamline this process. Passengers will now continue on the same road, take a right turn, and connect to the highway. Additionally, separate arrangements are being made to ensure that arriving and departing vehicles have different routes.
The construction of these roads will allow passenger vehicles and other traffic to flow directly; the need for vehicles to travel back and forth will be no more. This separation of arrival and departure roads, both connected to the National highway, will greatly enhance airport accessibility and convenience.
Key Changes at the airport:
Airport premises renovation
Separation of arrival and departure routes
Expansion from three to seven road lanes
Budget allocation of Rs. 20 crore
Tender announcements scheduled for next month
Project commencement in February
Visakhapatnam Airport has seen an increase in passenger numbers, gradually recovering to pre-Covid levels. Before the pandemic, approximately 2.85 million people used the airport annually. With normal air travel conditions, passenger traffic is once again surging.
The current three road lanes within the airport premises have become congested due to this increased demand. To avoid traffic inconveniences and enhance passenger safety, these lanes will be expanded to seven in the near future.
Furthermore, the airport's canopies will be extended to offer better shelter to passengers arriving on foot and prevent them from getting wet during rainy weather. Signage boards will also be installed to aid navigation within the airport.
With a budget of Rs. 20 crore, Visakhapatnam Airport will undergo significant improvements, featuring expanded road infrastructure, enhanced canopies, and informative signage.
These developments align with the growing passenger traffic, and additional expansion projects are currently being planned. Tenders for the project will be released in December, with construction planned to begin in February. The upgrades of the airport are expected to be completed within nine months, as disclosed by S. Raja Reddy, the Director of Visakhapatnam Airport.
