BJP Leader Arrested For Morphing Mamata Banerjee’s Picture Gets Bail

New Delhi: Arrested for morphing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s picture and posting it as a meme, BJP Yuva Morcha leader Priyanka Sharma was granted bail on Tuesday by the Supreme Court.

Sharma was arrested and sent to two week judicial custody for morphing Banerjee’s face on actor Priyanka Chopra’s picture from the MET Gala event in New York and posting it on Facebook.

A vacation bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and Sanjeev Khanna asked Sharma to apologise in writing to the Chief Minister after she is released.

The court observed that a politician must be prudent. It noted though freedom of speech and expression was “non-negotiable”, it should not encroach upon the rights of another person.

Acting on the complaint from a local Trinamool Congress leader, Vibhas Hazra, at the Dasnagar Police station, Sharma was arrested by West Bengal police under Section 500 (Defamation) of the IPC and under other provisions of the Information Technology Act.
