Citizenship Act: Death Toll Rises To 5 In Assam, 27 Injured 

GUWAHATI: As protests against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act continue to rage in Assam, five people have died in the state, according to reports.

Two deceased identified as Ishwar Nayak and Abdul Alim, suffered bullet wounds due to police firing during clashes in Guwahati on Thursday and one on Saturday taking the toll to five.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal has left a video message on his official Twitter handle and said the BJP-led government in the state is "committed to protect all genuine Indian citizens and the rights of the people of Assam."

The CM will also lead a team and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to appraise them of the ongoing stir in the state.

After the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was cleared by Parliament, violent protests broke out in the city and other parts of the state with agitators engaging in pitched battles with the police, forcing the administration to impose curfew.

According to the amended Act, non-Muslim refugees, who escaped religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and moved to India before December 31, 2014, will be granted Indian citizenship.
