Kashmiris’ Weddings Cancelled, Papers Filled With Ads
Srinagar: Right after India's Home Minister Amit Shah scrapped Article 370, which granted a special status to Jammu and Kashmir and also Article 35A, that allowed permanent residents of J&K exclusive rights over land and jobs, the state went into a limbo.
Not because of the legality of the issue, but the entire valley was cut off from the outside world, with no access to communications of any kind. Internet and phones connectivity was disabled and a strict curfew was imposed.
Because of which many events and functions like weddings and other festivities were called off. To inform their friends and relatives about the cancellation of these festivities turned out to be a tough task and the only way to reach out to them was through a single newspaper called the Greater Kashmir.
This information was shared by a Kashmiri Journalist Baba Umar who shared a photo of Greater Kashmir which showed the Page 3 almost entirely full of these advertisements of "Invitation Cancelled" and other SOS messages to families and friends.
So through these newspapers' ad spaces, family members and relatives of would-be couples informed the invited guests that the weddings and other festivities had been called off following post the announcement of scrapping Article 370.( With inputs from News18)
