Hyderabad: Expressing concern at the number of “religious identity-based hate crimes” in India, a group of eminent citizens has said in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that ‘Jai Shri Ram’ has become a provocative war cry with many lynchings taking place in its name on July 23.

The July 23 letter, which also stressed that there is “no democracy without dissent”, is signed by 49 celebrities from various fields, including filmmakers Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Aparna Sen, Shyam Benegal and Anurag Kashyap, as well as vocalist Shubha Mudgal, historian Ramchandra Guha and sociologist Ashis Nandy.

Meanwhile, veteran filmmaker Aparna Sen held a press conference on the issue and Republic TV anchor Arnab Goswami, kept on asking her high-pitched questions speaking over the phone during the media conference. He was questioning her on the 2017 Nowhatta mob lynching of Ayub Pandit, and the alleged targeting of former actor Zaira Wasim.

Sen, kept her calm, irrespective of Arnab calling her 'tukde-tukde gang', 'urban naxals' and refused to take up his questions saying she did not believe him to be a “non-partisan journalist”.
