Remembering The Iron Lady Indira Gandhi On Her 101st Birth Anniversary
Indira Gandhi: November 19, 1917- October 31 1984. Today is the 101st birth anniversary of the only woman Prime Minister of India—Smt Indira Gandhi. Known as "The Iron Lady" of India, a title also owned by her British counterpart Margaret Thatcher, she has served three terms as the Prime Minister of India (1966) and re-elected in 1980 for the fourth term.
She was known for her revolutionary measures on the agricultural sector that led to India’s self-sufficiency in food grain production as well as for her success in the Pakistan war, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh in 1971. She was also voted out of office for her authoritarian policies and the 21-month state of emergency that proved to be detrimental both for her political image.
The move was seen as a violation of the constitutional rights of Indians. In 1980, however, she was re-elected to a fourth term. Following Operation Blue Star—a deadly confrontation at the Sikh Golden temple in Punjab's Amritsar, four years later, Gandhi was assassinated by two of her bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
Indira Gandhi's birth anniversary is observed as the National Integration Day every year on 19th of November all over India.
Today is also World Toilet Day, an official United Nations International observance day that is celebrated on November 19, 2017.
