Twitter Bids Farewell To Retired Justice Chelameswar
The second-most senior judge of the Indian Supreme Court, Justice Jasti Chelameswar (65), will demit his office on Friday. His official last day of work, however, was May 18, before the court shut for the summer. There were many landmark judgements in his carrer which spanned over seven years. Of them were, quashing of draconian section 66A of the IT Act, the nine-judge bench that which declared privacy as a fundamental right in the Aadhaar hearings etc.
But the one event that perhaps cemented the name of Jasti Chelameswar in the minds of the people was an unprecedented judges press conference led by him on January 12 along with Justice Gogoi, Justice Kurien, and Justice Lokur. The Judges have made serious allegations on the administration of the Supreme Court, that it was not in order and released an undated letter that they wrote to the Chief Justice of India, Justice Dipak Misra. They raised issues that included the allocation of sensitive cases and the recommendation of judges for appointment to higher judiciary.
On his last official working day, despite being at loggerheads with CJI Misra, Chelameswar shared a bench with him, a custom and practice of the Supreme Court.
Twitterati reacted to his retirement crediting him for his yeomen service to the Indian Judiciary. Several wishes poured in, some thanking him for his service while some others wishing him good health.
