Massive publicity blitzkrieg notwithstanding, girl child infanticide is still a harsh reality. In a shocking incident, a mother snuffed the life out of a new-born girl child by pressing a pillow against her face and asphyxiating her. The incident occurred right in the national capital region in Ghaziabad of Uttar Pradesh.

The woman, identified as Aarti, wanted a male child, but gave birth to a girl child. An upset Aarti asphyxiated the girl child by pressing a pillow against her face. After the baby died, she hid her in a washing machine and enacted a kidnap drama. However, the police grew suspicious as Aarti's confessions were incoherent and self-contradictory. On questioning, she finally spilled the beans and admitted to having killed the baby as she did not want a girl child.

The police arrested Aarti and have registered a case.
