Karimnagar (Telangana): A local court on Tuesday sentenced a man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment in a dowry death case.Additional Sessions Judge D Vasudeva Rao sentenced Mamidi Santhosh, 25, to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for abetment of suicide of his wife Bhagyalaxmi, 21.

He was also slapped with a fine of Rs 1,000. According to the prosecution, Santhosh, a resident of Madipalli village in the district, had kidnapped Bhagyalaxmi and married her in Hyderabad in 2011. Later, the couple shifted to Madipalli village where after some time Santhosh and his family members began harassing his wife for dowry, the prosecution said.

Santhosh, his parents, sister and brother physically and mentally tortured Bhagyalaxmi to bring Rs 5 lakh as dowry, Rasheed said, adding that succumbing to the pressure of dowry demand, she committed suicide by consuming pesticide on December 23, 2011, and died after three days of the incident.

A complaint was lodged against Santhosh, his mother Laxmi (45), sisters Sridevi and Shirisha, brother Mallesh (23) and friend Karra Devender Reddy (27) with Peddapalli police. The judge convicted Santhosh and Devender Reddy, who was also sent to two years RI, while acquitted four others in the case.
