JAC firm on Sep 30 'march' for Telangana

Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) has said that it will go ahead with its proposed 'march' for separate statehood on September 30 notwithstanding appeals made by chief minister and others to put it off.

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and some other leaders have asked JAC to postpone its march, expected to be attended by a large number of people, to a later date as the prestigious global meet on biodiversity is scheduled to be held here from October 1 to 19.

There have been apprehensions expressed in some quarters that the 'march' might turn violent. The international biodiversity convention would be attended by delegates from as many as 193 countries, besides several heads of states, sources said.

JAC convener M Kodandaram, however, told reporters that they would stick to their plan and take out the march at Tank Bund on the banks of Hussain Sagar lake in the heart of the city. The JAC would postpone the 'march' only if a concrete statement is made over formation of the separate state, he said. The JAC leaders met Home Minister P Sabita Reddy here tonight. As per her suggestion, they would meet city police commissioner tomorrow to seek permission for the event, according to sources.

Meanwhile, the ruling Congress MPs from Telangana, who have been vocal in seeking separate state, have expressed their support for the 'march'.
