I told the police not to arrest Kanhaiya: KCR
Hyderabad: Terming the suicide of Rohit Vemula as unfortunate and that he was saddened by it, the Telangana Chief Minister on Saturday claimed in the Assembly that he had given instructions to the police not to arrest Kanhaiya when he had come to Hyderabad earlier this week.
Responding to the opposition parties’ demand for an explanation from the government on the troubling developments in HCU, the chief minister stated in the house on Saturday that he was saddened by the suicide of the Rohit Vemula at HCU and added that the issue was not whether Rohit was a Dalit or not.
Stating that varsities should not become platforms for such agitations, he said that each and every one should fight to eradicate these social evils. Disconnecting water and power supply and closing down students’ mess was not correct, he said.
KCR claimed that he had given instructions not to arrest Kanhaiya Kumar. “I spoke to the DGP and Commissioner of Cyberabad and ordered them not to take him into their custody and instructed them to give permission to hold the meeting at Sundaraiya Vignana Kendram on the next day, just to respect and protect the right to freedom of speech.”
The Chief Minister stated that recalling of Vice Chancellor of HCU was not in the ambit of the state government but rested rather with the central government, though Hyderabad is geographically located in Telangana state.
“I will bring the matter of HCU incidents to the notice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a solution will be given to the issue in two or three days”, he assured.
KCR also gave an explanation on the death of a man in Osmania University and the attack on MLA Sampath Reddy who had gone there in this regard. The CM also urged the Opposition parties to give meaningful and constructive advices and directions instead of meaningless criticism.
