Hyderabad, the City of Nawabs, apart from the historical heritage, it is also popular for its lakes which provides a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Some of the lakes here are natural water bodies and some are man-made in ancient times to store water.
These lakes offer a widespread ambiance of peace and tranquility through its cool environment. The City of Nawabs was known earlier as The City of Lakes. Hyderabad had about 3,000 water bodies from minor to major. But many of them have vanished in the past decades due to chaotic urbanization, multiplying concrete jungles and lack of awareness on saving nature.

Hussain Sagar Lake
Built in the year 1562, this man-made lake is in the heart of the city. Mainly built to meet the irrigation and storage, this lake is said to be the most famous and historic lakes over here and is also a famous tourist spot of Hyderabad. There is a large statue of Gautam Buddha erected in the middle of the lake which is known to be built in 1992.
There are many eateries around the lake. The road surrounding this beautiful lake is known as Necklace Road where you can experience amazing night rides.
Osman Sagar Lake
Also known as Gandipet Lake, Osman Sagar is located in the outskirts of the city. This lake has been named after the late seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. This lake and reservoir is known to be the main source of drinking water for both Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
Apart from a source of water for the cities, the sunset and sunrise at the lake is simply mesmerising. This lake is a perfect place for people who are looking to escape from the daily hustle bustle of the city. The park beside this lake with lush greenery also provides you with perfect serenity.
Himayath Sagar Lake
Located in the outskirts of Hyderabad and parallel to Osman Sagar, Himayat Sagar is named after Himayat Ali Khan, the youngest son of the 7th Nizam. The beautiful road constructed on the bund of the lake will give you an amazing driving exprience.

Shamirpet Lake
Located in the heart of Secunderabad, this lake is the major attraction for the tourists who are visiting the twin cities -Hyderabad and Secunderabad. This lake was built during Nizam's rule and was a major spot for bird watching for the tourists especially during winters.
This lake is a perfect spot for the tourists who want to visit some peaceful places instead of crowdy sight-seeing spots. November to February is the best time to visit this place as you can spot a number of migratory birds.
Alwal Lake
Located just about 8 kms from twin cities, Alwal lake gives you a perfect view of the nature with spot a variety of animals and birds. The lake is the oldest one in its kind and serves as an ideal tourist spot to relax and have some good time here.
The lake is in the heart of Alwal, near the Secunderabad-Mumbai Railway track, and has a very scenic view from the railway track and also from the Alwal Railway Station.
