Hyderabad to Screen India’s only Giant IMAX Interstellar print
Prasads I-MAX in the city is going to be the only theater in India that will be screening Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’ in 70 mm IMAX format. In layman’s terms, Giant I-MAX print.
Hyderabad’s Prasads IMAX has the only screen in the country where the space exploration drama can be watched on 70mm film and in the immersive format. Interstellar opens in India on November 7, two days after its release in the US. The director's latest project stars Mathew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway as astronauts who burrow through a wormhole to look for an alternative planet to Earth.
As a result, film buffs from all major Indian cities are now showing interest in this theater, to catch a glimpse of Nolan’s sci-fi adventure in the way he envisioned it.
In India, 95% of the single-screen and multiplex cinemas have switched to digital from celluloid, according to this year’s FICCI-KPMG report on trends in the media and entertainment industries. (The country is esimated to have between 12,000 and 13,000 screens). Of these, only Prasads IMAX in Hyderaband has the 70mm projection equipment necessary to screen Interstellar the way director hopes it will be viewed.
Nolan has gone against the trend and his penchant for using analogue technology has now brought Prasads IMAX back into the limelight. Other I-MAX screens in Mumbai and Bangalore will be using the regular IMAX print and not the 70mm immersive format.
