Husband Steals Wife’s Kidney For Dowry

Kolkata: In a bizarre incident, a husband sold the kidney of his wife for more dowry and prevented her from visiting a doctor when she complained of stomach pain.

Though the incident took place about two years ago, it came to light after the victim approached the police. According to the police narration, Rita Sarkar (28) was married to Biswajit about 12 years ago. However, Biswajit and his family continued to harass Rita for dowry. A couple of years ago, Rita complained of stomach pain and Biswajit took her to hospital. At the hospital, he forced her to undergo a surgery stating that she had appendicitis issues. However, despite the surgery Rita complained that her stomach pain did not subside.

Instead of taking her to a doctor, Biswajit threatened her against taking any medical help. Her relatives, later, rushed her to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. After preliminary examination at the hospital, doctors concluded that one of her kidneys was missing. It dawned on a shocked Rita that her husband stole her kidney and hence warned her against visiting any doctor. She lodged a police complaint, following the doctor's report. The police have arrested Biswajit and his brother. Later, raids were also conducted on the hospital which performed the kidney operation on Rita. Police are also investigating if a kidney racket was involved in the incident.
