Homosexual man strongly believed he was pregnant

In an uncommon medical case, a man from Kozhikode believes he was pregnant. He kept insisting about this to his family after which he was taken to a psychiatrist. The unemployed man, who is a father of two children, refused to accept that men can’t become pregnant. He went further and said he can experience some baby movements inside the belly. During the counseling, the man confessed that he was involved in a homosexual relationship after which he became pregnant.

The team of doctors, headed by Dr P N Suresh Kumar, at KMCT opted for battery of tests andconcluded that man was delusional. The doctor believed that delusion might have been the result of the man being an active homosexual during his adolescent days.

Referring to the unusual case, Dr Kumar said delusion is a fixed abnormal belief about something.

"We never came across this sort of case before. He was an active homosexual in his adolescent years which may contributed to his beliefs. But, his homosexuality did not affect his marriage. Usually, we see couvade syndrome in some dads-to-be who show certain symptoms of pregnancy (like nausea, weight gain or sleep problems) when their partners get pregnant. The patient went for counseling and took risperidone. This delusion was cured due to the medical intervention. After a series of counseling sessions, he stopped indulging in homosexual activities. Now, the patient is recovering and we are measuring his progress during periodic check-ups," he said.
