Heritage farm soon in AP to preserve livestock breeds
Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy said in Hyderabad that the State Government would initiate special steps to commemorate the historic CoP-11, being held in this historic city. He said Andhra Pradesh possesses rich livestock wealth and home for four livestock breeds.
“First, we plan to set up a Livestock Heritage Farm to preserve for posterity our pride livestock breeds i.e., cattle breeds of Ongole and Punganur, Sheep breed of Deccani and poultry breed of Aseel. This will be as part of our commitment in achieving Aichi Target No.13,” he said.
The Chief Minister was speaking at the Plenary Session of High Level Segment (HLS) of CoP-11 today in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who addressed the Biodiversity meet.
The Chief Minister said the State Government also proposes to develop Araku Valley as a Globally important Agricultural Heritage site to recognize the contributions of tribal families to the development of Climate Smart Agriculture. He said appropriate documentation will be prepared for submission to the Food and Agricultural Organization.
Kiran kumar Reddy said sustainable use of Bio-diverse resources would pave the way for economic development of mankind in general and more so of the poor sections of society. The inhabitants shall have over-riding stake in sustainable use of natural resources, he said.
“Our policies shall capture this philosophy so that Bio-diversity is conserved for the posterity and let us once again remember that we have the role and responsibility of protecting the Biodiversity for our sake and for the sake of our children,” Kirankumar stated. He announced that to mark this historical event of the Conference of Parties to CBD, “we are creating a bio-diversity complex in Hyderabad. It will host a bio-diversity museum with the support of the Centre,” he said and thanked the Prime Minister for the initiative taken by him.
