Helen effect: Tree falls on woman, dies

A 65- year-old woman died, and another was injured when a 50-foot coconut tree that was uprooted by strong winds caused by Cyclone Helen, fell on them in Kothapeta, East Godavari district.

According to reports, Elizabeth and Durga were pinned under the tree, but officials managed to rescue Durga. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where her condition is said to be stable. But Elizabeth died on the spot.
Reports state that thousands were evacuated and sent to safer places in East Godavari and West Godavari districts. Fishermen have been alerted and asked not to venture into the choppy waters.
