Heavy Rains Make Life Miserable in Telangana; 8 Die; Crop Loss in 494 Hectares

Hyderabad: National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) is continuing rescue operations as 12 troops are engaged in helping people shift to safer places in the rain-ravaged twin cities. Each troop of SDRF is comprising 40 men. KT Rama Rao, Telangana Minister for Municipal Administration, said six more NDRF troops and two helicopters are kept ready in case of emergency situation. The State government is appointing a consultant to study and advise on road conditions as several parts on city roads caved in following the heavy rains.

Meanwhile, eight people, including two children, died in different incidents in the wake of continuous heavy rains across the State. In an awful incident, a mother with her kid washed away in Nawab vagu. 23 people were stranded in Manjira flood waters and officials are taking measures to rescue them. TS Transco and Genco CMD Prabhakara Rao has taken up field visits to monitor the power supply situation in the state.

TS SPDCL CMD Raghuma Reddy has deployed Disaster Management Teams to ensure regular power supply in flood-hit areas. Energy Minister Jagadish Reddy appreciated the efforts of the electricity department in ensuring the regular power supply despite heavy rains disturbed day-to-day life in the twin cities.

Citizens can call 040- 2111 1111 or 100 or 1912 in case of power supply problems. KTR reviewed the situation on floods in the city. Home Minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy, Mayor Bonthu Rammohan, GHMC Commissioner and other officials participated in the review meeting.

KTR said the State governemnt has already discussed with the army officials for taking their help in case of emergency. Health Minister Laxma Reddy said 15 mobile health teams are working to take care of health conditions in the city as to prevent contagious diseases in the wake of floods. The minister further said the government has canceled all the leaves of health department employees until the city returns to normalcy.

The Musi river is in spate. Increased water levels disrupted public transportation at Pillayipalli in Hayathnagar mandal. This has snapped the transport links between Hayathnagar and Ghatkesar.

Crop Loss in 494 Hectares

Crop loss in Telangana is estimated to be in 494 hectares. Cotton in 367 hectares, paddy in 29 hectares, chilli in six hectares and other crops in 92 hectares were damaged due to heavy rains.
